Iran says renault accepts logan productions 2006 / 07 / 05

TEHRAN (AFX) - Renault SA has accepted conditions set by Iran governing the production of its low-cost Logan model in the country, after previously refusing, deputy industry minister Mohsen Shaterzadeh said.

Renault now accepts that 20 pct of production should be earmarked for export and an amended contract with the group is expected to be signed in the next two weeks, state television cited Shaterzadeh as saying.

Iran said on April 18 that the Logan project was suspended until Renault accepted Iran's demand to be given access to foreign markets and a week later warned that the dispute was endangering the project to build Renault's Megane hatchback, due to start this month.

Renault had previously said it could not agree to the export demand as Iran has not signed a regional tariff agreement.

Renault struck a deal with the Iranian government in 2004 to produce the Logan as part of a joint venture between Renault Pars, the car giant's 51 pct-owned Iranian unit, and the Automotive Industry Development Co, grouping Iran's two main state-controlled carmakers, Saipa and Iran Khodro.

The 300 mln eur deal was the largest direct and long-term investment in Iran by a French company since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Annual production is targeted at 300,000 units.
