The ambassador of Iran in Brazil, Mohsen Shaterzadeh, affirmed this Thursday that Brazil didn´t offer political asylum to the Iranian Sakineh Ashtiani, contradicting what Chancellor Celso Amorim said in the beginning of the week.
According to Shaterzadeh, there was no formal offer of asylum or political refuge.
The Iranian ambassador emphasized that this issue concerns only to Iran.
Celso Amorim affirmed that the decision of allowing the asylum of Ashtiani in Brazil would be good for the image of the country.
In the evaluation of the Iranian, the global repercussion of the issue is a way of embarrassing the president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
According to him, “there was no document, oral note or exchange of notes, as it is the orientation in the diplomacy in cases like that. Crimes occurred and they will be judged according to the code of Iran, which follows moral and cultural precepts of the country. The process involves Iranian people, so why should it have the involvement of other countries?”
The ambassador said still to be sure that the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hadn´t the claim of interfering in an internal subject of Iran.
He confirmed to have treated of the issue in meetings with diplomats in Brazil and in Iran and that the ambassador of Brazil in Teheran, Antonio Salgado, also discussed the subject with authorities of the country.
